140 zine

Marble-Soda at Divang Tune - Tokyo

Combining my love for old cameras, film photography and zine printing. I’ve been documenting overlooked people and communities pushing Dubstep and Soundsystem culture around the world. Currently on issue #7, alongside 140 Tape Vol.2 with RIOT.

140 zine preface

…Following a conversation with J.Sparrow on his Rinse FM show. We discussed the current state of the scene and how big publications only do occasional pieces on the scene these days. I don't want to see our community's efforts go undocumented outside the online bubble. We live in a world now where we're at the mercy of the perpetual social media feeds and algorithms. The sheer amount of content being shared online means a post you make highlighting something that you've poured your heart and soul into, can be forgotten in a day if not hours.

I hope to counter that with the zine, celebrating this current era with more permanence by documenting it in print. While the scene is still a far cry from its heyday of more mainstream recognition, I think that makes it even more important to document what's going on now. Many of the OGs are still doing their thing and they'll feature in this zine too but behind them is a thousand other torchbearers. Those carrying the Dubstep flame in cities and countries more isolated from the concentration of the scene. To me, they are just as interesting and worthy of recognition as the biggest artists and labels.

140 Tape series

The tape series came about as a way to capture something really special around a night or event documented in the 140 zine. Vol.1 was in collaboration with DeepEnd! Movement label, based in ljubljana, Slovenia and 7 of the producers on label provided exclusive music for the project. Vol.2 was in collaboration with RIOT based in India. For this we ran competition for Indian producers to enter and this resulted in a 7 track compilation.

Each volume only has 140 available total and the only way to get hold of the msuic digitally is to own the tape.
